Accessibility

Last updated: October 2026

This website is meant to be usable by everyone. The benchmark is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA.

Two views, one content

The start page comes in two views. The desk is a surface to explore: the objects lie scattered and can be moved, and the view can be panned and zoomed. The simple view shows the same content as a calm page from top to bottom, with headings, lists and ordinary links.

Both views have the same content. The simple view needs no JavaScript and works without motion.

How to switch the view

  • The first link on the start page is called “Go to the simple view”. You reach it with the Tab key.
  • In the dock at the bottom edge of the screen, “More” opens a menu with the entry “Simple view”. On narrow screens “Simple view” is in the dock itself instead.
  • In the simple view, “Go to the desk” takes you back.
  • If your device asks for reduced motion, the simple view opens by itself.

The page remembers your choice in your browser.

What the desk can do

  • Every object can be reached with the Tab key, and the view travels to the focused object.
  • Enter or Space opens folders, the paper and lab entries, Escape closes them again.
  • The focus is always visible.
  • Text and controls meet the level AA contrast requirements, in the light and in the dark design.
  • Motion follows the setting for reduced motion.

Known limitations

  • On the desk the objects lie freely in space. Screen readers read them in a fixed order, and the spatial arrangement is lost. The simple view does not have this limitation.
  • Moving objects and zooming the view with a gesture only works with a mouse or a finger. Neither is needed for the content.
  • The site has been checked with automated tools and by hand with the keyboard. A test with different screen readers is still to come.
  • Linked project websites and profiles are not part of this statement.
